Survey Monkey

PROBLEMS

The motivation of this project comes from our daily life, sometime we want to go out and have some fun, but usually don’t have a clear though that where should we go and what should we do. Then eventually end up playing game or using our mobile device at home, which are not the best option to spend our day.

QUANTITATIVE SURVEY

The project start with quantitative research, I created a survey via Survey Monkey in order to fine a general pattern of people’s activities. I asked them how they spend their free time, how they choose an activity, what they would do if they stay at home etc. I got 60 responds, the data shows that, people spend lots of time on their phone, mostly play game, people would choose activity by their Mood and Interest.

QUALITATIVE GUERRILLA RESEARCH

This a low cost but effective research method by embedding interview questions into normal conversation. The interviewee wouldn’t know this is interview, so they would usually give honest answers.

Guerrilla User's Shadowing

I asked my friends to hangout with me without telling them where to go and what to do. I met them either on the street or in their home, when we met, I implied that I have no idea for the hangout, then I observed how they come up their suggestions.

Guerrilla interview

I used guerrilla interview to ask people about how they choose their activities, the action when they feel bored, the feeling about consuming time with their phone etc. This is a really fun interview and I got lots of realistic and meaningful responses.

PERSONA

I created a persona according the Survey, Interview and User’s Shadowing that I did on the previous stages. The persona shows that, people would use their phone when they feel bored, but they don’t really satisfy with their time spending as they what meaningful activities. They would actively looking for things to do when they are outside.

Ideas

After the Ideation and brainstorm process, I finally came up with a question: might we create a recommender recommends activities to people that fits their current Mood and Interests?

User Stories

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

WIREFRAME

This a simple activities recommender that can recommends activities base on your current situations, you can see if you like the place/ activities, the info of the place(distant, ongoing events, address etc). you also can see the most popular mood in the week, popular place to with your current mood etc. The next very important things to do are open prototype to test, and receive feedback from the users.

WIREFRAME

I made a mistake, I created a mid-high fidelity prototype at the beginning of my testing phase. During the test, people either giving me unconstructable feedback or feedback that focus on the colours or size (which was not important at that stage.) I took a step back, I made my prototype to look “Fake” again. Then I got lots of constructive feedback which can make meaningful iterations.

VISUAL DESIGN

I use Atomic Design Method to design the UI in order to explore the potential variations and remain consistency. It has 5 stages, which are Atom, Molecules, organisms, Templates and Pages. It allows me turn abstract concepts or elements into concrete pages.

STYLE GUIDE

The visual language that I tried to communicate were Vibrant, Clean, Friendly and Light, in order to achieve that, I decided use Purple and White as the primary colours, use rounded shapes and font, which may encourage people do some activities rather than sitting at home and playing video games.
